Downer: A True Ace
In an era of amateur basketball dominated by unrestricted elite prep schools, coach Gregg Downer's historic 36-year public-school dynasty reveals how he built Lower Merion into a Philadelphia basketball powerhouse—and helped shape the genesis of a young Kobe Bryant.
The film follows a chronological structure, anchored by present-day interviews with Downer and members of the Lower Merion coaching staff (past and present), former Lower Merion players, prominent Philadelphia basketball figures, and journalists, supported by archival footage, photography, and historical media coverage. Every episode, hosted by Jackson Juzang, is built around a human-interest issue that is actively shaping the lives of Americans, with a journalist as the expert guide — someone who got close to the story not as a pundit or analyst, but as a reporter who showed up, stayed, and documented what they found.
